Langtang area is toward the north of Kathmandu Valley. The scenery here is spectacular, and the trek more adventurous as the area is visited by fewer tourists. To the west of Langtang is Ganesh Himal with a range of 6000 to 7000 meters. The Gosainkund and Helambu region lies to its south; these can be combined with Langtang to make treks from 7 days to 21 days. The area was designated Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park in 1971; it is inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa people whose religious practices, language and dress are much more similar to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. The forests in the region have temperate and sub-alpine vegetation. Wildlife includes migratory birds, deer, monkey, Tahr and Pika. The best time for trekking the Langtang area is spring and autumn. Most of the trekking routes in Helambu and Langtang are well served with teahouses making independent trekking quite possible. But there are no such facilities in the Ganesh Himal area or Ganja La area. A journey to the Langtang valley offers an opportunity to explore the Tamang villages, climb small peaks and to visit glaciers at a more comfortable altitude than other trekking regions Access to Helambu is particularly easy and quick. Sundarijal, which is one of the most convenient starting points, is an hour’s drive from Kathmandu. Other possible road heads are at Budhanilkantha, Kakani and four hour drive away at melamchi Pul. For Langtang and Ganesh Himal the Choice is limited drive to Dhunche in Rasuwa district. The road then continues to Syabrubesi from where Ganesh Himal and Langtang treks can start. Langtang Valley Trek: Trekking in the Langtang Valley combines the remote and spectacular valley of Langtang, with the high mountain lakes at Gosainkund and the beautiful Helambu Valley. Trail of Langtang valley trek is in the most unspoiled national parks of Nepal, which is perhaps why there is such a high appeal of this trekking route. Situated at North of Kathmandu near the Tibetan border, it is the most easily accessible highland sanctuary from the capital. This remote Langtang valley is enclosed by snow-capped mountains which culminate in the peak of Langtang Lirung (7246m). Langtang valley trekking starts from the lower Langtang Valley which takes you through forests and among the villages and farmlands of many who are of Tibetan origin. The deep gorges of Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola are thickly forested with rhododendron, oak, maple and alder. The stretch of forest around Ghoda Tabela in the lower Langtang Valley and below Gosainkunda is inhabited by the red panda, a rare and threatened symbol of a healthy Himalayan ecosystem.
Langtang Gosainkunda Trekking – We follow a rugged trail with dramatic views; to the west Himal chuli (7893m) Manaslu (8156mm) and Ganesh Himal (7406m). On a clear day, even the Annapurna range can be seen rising up behind and to the north across the valley is Langtang Lirung. We pass a few huts in the high picture of Laurebina, cross a small ridge and have our first views of the holy lakes. There are about a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin, the main three being Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Gosainkunda. According to legend, Shiva created Gosainkunda when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed a poison that threatened to destroy the world.
Langtang Gosainkunda Helambu Trekking – Langtang, Gosainkunda & Helambu trek begin in the ancient city of Kathmandu; from where you will board a bus to Syabrubesi; the starting point of your trek. This is an interesting village on the banks of the Bhote Kosi River. The trail gains elevation as you make your way along the Langtang Khola, first through forests of oak and rhododendron and then bamboo forests on the higher reaches of the trail. Traveling through Langtang (3,430m/11,253ft), you will reach the Langtang valley and the friendly Sherpa village of Kyanjing Gompa (3,870m/12,697ft). In Kyanjing Gompa you will experience the spiritual lifestyle of dedicated Buddhist monks who perform their rituals in a beautiful Monastery dating back to circa 1300 A.D.
